Swift at 350 – comic launch!
Come along on Saturday to find out the winners of this year’s Dundee Comics Prize!
We are delighted to invite you the launch of Swift at 350, a comic that responds to the work of the world’s greatest satirist. The event takes place this Saturday (25th November), and promises to be a lot of fun! Part of the Being Human Festival of the Arts 2017, the occasion is inspired by Jonathan Swift’s satirical novel, Gulliver’s Travels.

Dundee Comics Creative Space
Professor Chris Murray will give a brief overview of some of the wonderful adaptations of Swift’s work in comics, and the winner of the Dundee Comics Prize will be announced. The creators of the stories that appear in Swift at 350 will discuss their contribution, and every attendee will be able to pick up a free copy of the comic. Come meet the creators and learn more about the process of bringing ideas to life in the comics form. There will also be a wine reception.

The Imaginarium – Being Human Festival
DCCS is running comics workshops as part of the Being Human Festival from 2-5pm on 22nd November in the Dalhousie Building room 2S14, University of Dundee. Details below. All Welcome!
What is the Google brain doing to our imagination? Are lie detectors always honest? What is bullet time? What is monster theory?
The Imaginarium, a showcase for the arts and sciences, comprises eight rooms in the Dalhousie Building at the University of Dundee stuffed with ongoing, drop-by activities (i.e. come by when you can). Ushers will be available to take you on a tour of the different rooms on the day itself.

Charlie Adlard talk at DCCS
Acclaimed comics artist, and the UK’s Comics Laureate, Charlie Adlard will be in Dundee at 6pm on Friday 10th November 2017 to give a talk on his career, and his work as Comics Laureate.
Charlie is best known as the artist of the hugely successful comic, The Walking Dead, which has been adapted into a massively popular television series. He has also worked on comics such as 2000AD, The X-Files, and various titles for both Marvel and DC.
The event, which is open to the public, will start and 6pm in Dundee Comics Creative Space and will take the form of a Q&A session, chaired by Professor Chris Murray, followed by a wine reception. DCCS will be at Dundee Science Centre tomorrow running comics workshops during the Gulliver’s Worlds day of events (part of the Dundee Science Festival and the Being Human festival). There is a full day of events from 10am-5pm. Our artist/facilitators will be there between 10am-noon and 2-4pm. Come along and invent some wonderful creatures and make some comics!

What does it feel like from the perspective of a giant, do we realise how small we actually are and what might life look like if it were to exist somewhere else in the universe?

The Dundee Comics Prize 2017
Jonathan Swift, the world’s greatest satirist and author of Gulliver’s Travels, A Tale of a Tub, and A Modest Proposal, turns 350 in November 2017. The University of Dundee’s Comics Creative Space and the Being Human Festival will team-up to celebrate Swift’s life and legacy. There will be a series of events in Dundee, including talks, workshops, a pantomime, and the launch of a new comic.
You are invited to contribute a story to the comic based on or inspired by Swift’s satire. This follows on the success of previous Dundee Comics Prize publications, Frankenstein Begins: Mary Shelley’s Dundee (2015) and Time and Space (2016), a graphic anthology of comics inspired by the works of H.G. Wells.
Entries to the Swift comic competition should come in the form of 4 – 6 pages of completed comic art. The story may be an adaptation of a story by Swift, or a satire that is inspired by his work. The prize is £300, plus publication of the story. Runners-up may also be published. The deadline for submissions is Sunday 19th November 2017.
The work will be judged by a panel consisting of comic creators and scholars, with the announcement being made at the launch of the comic on Saturday 25th November 2017 in Dundee Comics Creative Space at 6pm. The comic will be produced by Ink Pot Studios. The aim of the Dundee Comics Prize is to nurture talent in comics and to help new creators gain recognition. Anyone can enter the competition, and the submission can be in any style, in black and white or colour, but the work must be finished to a high standard (lettered, inked, etc), and it must be a complete story. The work must be original, and it must not have been published already or be currently offered for publication elsewhere.
When submitting final copy good quality electronic copies are requested in the first instance. The prize is awarded to the creator or team who produce the work. If the comic is collaborative the members of the team will share the prize money equally. All winners (including runners-up) will be asked to provide a short account of how the comic was created, along with any relevant photos and sketches. These will be used on the DCCS website. The decision of the judging panel is final.

This special event accompanies the exhibition ‘Girls in Print: Female Figures in British Comics’, which explores the surprising range of subjects covered by the girls’ comics which were at their height in the 1960s and 70s.

Noted as a ‘book-lover’s cartoonist’, Tom Gauld’s weekly strips in The Guardian stitch together the worlds of literary criticism and pop culture to create brilliantly executed, concise comics.

Jackie magazine – though it folded almost 25 years ago – is still a legend in the world of publishing. Today, in the same D. C. Thomson Meadowside offices where the magic happened, journalist Gayle Anderson and filmmaker Shona Main revisit the time, the place and their experiences as young women – just a few years older than their readers – shaping the teenage sensibilities of a nation. Advice on spots, boyfriends, bad friends and bodily functions will be on offer if and where required.
Comics Club is back!
It’s the end of the summer holidays but don’t despair – it’s time for the DCCS Comics Clubs to start again! From Tuesday 15th August we will be running on Tuesdays from 4.30-6.30 pm for 10-13 year olds and on Wednesdays from 4.30-6.30 pm for 14-17 year olds.

Small Press Day – comics comics comics!
Here at DCCS we are celebrating Small Press Day on Saturday 8th July between 12-3pm with a comic and zine fair. Our young Comics Clubbers have been working super hard making new comics and we will be launching Da Awesome Comic: Comics Club Comic Strips volume 2. But that is not all! Below is a sneak peak of the individual zine-style comics that will also be on sale, don’t they look amazing?!? Which ones will you buy?

Summer Holidays
Happy Holidays everyone! The Comics Clubs at DCCS are taking a summer break so there will be no weekly workshops until 15th August. We will be doing occasional one-off workshops with community groups in Dundee over the summer and we will post the details on our website when we have them – watch this space!
Also, this Saturday we are having a comic fair as part of Small Press Day. Come along to DCCS between 12-3pm on July 8th to pick up lots of awesome comics made by our young creators!
