DCCS on the news!

If you were watching BBC News at 6 o’clock on Tuesday 28th March, you may have caught a glimpse of Dundee Comics Creative Space! A BBC team came to Dundee to speak to the public and gather thoughts on the second independence referendum. A small group of University of Dundee politics students were interviewed and DCCS was chosen as the location and some of our artists were given air time! Catriona Laird and Elliot Balson were featured at work in the Ink Pot studio, with Elliot producing a drawing of Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon which was featured at the end of the segment. Sadly it is no longer available on the iPlayer but we saved some screen grabs. We’re trying not to let the fame go to our heads too much!

Study Comics in Dundee!

Did you know that you can study comics at the University of Dundee and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design? DCCS was set up by the Comics Studies department in Dundee, and many of our artist/facilitators are graduates of the courses offered there. We are very proud and privileged to be part of the Comics Studies community in the city.

The Masters in Comics and Graphic Novels is the only course of its kind in the UK, and Dundee is one of only a handful of institutions in the world offering the opportunity to study comics at postgraduate level. Every year students from around the world come to Dundee to study comics. Workshops start up again this week:
Tuesday 10th January 4.30-6.30pm for 10-13 year olds
Wednesday 11th January 4.30-6.30pm for 14-17 year olds

All welcome, no experience necessary, all materials provided.
Free of charge, just turn up!

Tackling Disability Hate Crime

Over the last few months our Comics Clubbers and artists have been collaborating with local charity Advocating Together to produce a comic looking at disability hate crime. This 12-page comic highlights particular examples of hate crime, and gives information on what to do if you experience these crimes. This includes using Keep Safe cards, which give information and emergency contact details of the holder.

We are very pleased to be hosting the launch of the Tackling Disability Hate Crime comic at DCCS HQ today. If you would like to pick up a copy, please contact Advocating Together.
